Dividends are a percentage of the company’s earnings paid out as cash to shareholders. The company determines the amount per share to distribute to classes of shareholders if any for that share class. Dividends are usually paid out quarterly, but sometimes, as in the case of certain real estate investment trusts (REITS) they are paid out every month. The dividend yield is calculated by taking the dividend amount per share and dividing it by the share price.
