Share Repurchases

A share repurchase (stock buyback) is when a publicly traded company purchases its shares back on the open marketplace. It is a way to return cash back to the shareholders just like dividends. It is important to note that the capital return for shareholders ultimately depends on the price of which those shares are repurchased. Ideally, company management would be buying at lower valuations relative to the long-term price of the stock to maximize the return for shareholders.
